Hygiene & bowel habits

Poor hygiene does not cause enlarged hemorrhoids, but piles can make anal hygiene difficult.
Unfortunately things tend to get worse as hemorrhoidal disease progresses. Skin irritation often results from soiled and wet skin induced by hemorrhoidal disease. The following tips may help you protect your skin, keep it clean and prevent eczema or inflammation.

  • Avoid scrubbing with rough toilet paper.
  • Use water only without soap and a washcloth for cleansing after bowel movements.
  • In emergency cases, you may use wet toilet paper. However, it should be free of fragrances or dyes.
  • Breathable underwear, for example made of 100 percent cotton, prevents moisture from building up.

Changing your bowel habits

Gone are the days of long sessions on the toilet – regretfully. Do not force anything, just go to the toilet when you feel the urge to do so. Forceful straining

at stool strains the hemorrhoid plexus and increases the risk of hemorrhoidal disease. Spending less time on the toilet and avoiding reading while you are there will ultimately lead to a decrease in straining and downward pressure.
