Which doctor is the right one?

Whether you choose a family doctor or a specialist, you need to feel that you can trust him or her.

If you have symptoms of hemorrhoids, your first point of contact will most likely be your family doctor or gynecologist. After the first examination, called anal screening, the physician will make a diagnosis and discuss with you what your next steps will be. If there is a need for further clarification, if your condition is advanced or if conservative treatment no longer helps, you will be referred to a specialist.

  • Gastroenterologists are specialized in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Proctologists deal with diseases of the anorectal area. Proctology is a separate interdisciplinary field which includes specialist skills in surgery, gastroenterology, urology, gynecology and dermatology.
  • For problems involving the anal skin, dermatologists can also be helpful.
  • Sometimes, urologists are also trained in proctology.

Please be aware: All diagnosis for anal disease have to include an anal examination.

In some cases, piles may also be detected as an incidental finding during colorectal cancer screening. If this applies to you, don’t hesitate to discuss possible treatments with your gastroenterologist or ask him for a referral to a proctologist.
